Thanks from a Grateful Elder

This snow storm here in WNY is not a joke. Today its danger compounds. Snow  - hard cold snow is piled so high. Half of my large garage is covered. I cannot see the house across the street. The snow is up to my windows now and it keeps coming down. Power outages are being reported in nearby towns. Eight deaths are attributed to this disaster. Because that is what it is - a disaster. My town has made the national news. It has been constantly on the major networks and the weather channel. It is clear so many of us are in danger.

Especially seniors.

I consider myself pretty fit for my age and very resourceful. But the fact is, as you age, there are limits to what you can do physically. This storm has presented many challenges. I have met them emotionally and spiritually. I am unable to respond physically, however.

It's an age thing. All I can do is wait out this frightful episode.

This is why calls and texts and messages from friends and family mean so much and make me feel like I will be okay. They understand my situation. Glenn and I are lucky to have one another. To enjoy as best we can this internment. But we, being social animals and doers, if you will, are anxious to rejoin the human race.

I cannot believe the people in my life who couldn't take the time for a quick phone call, email, text, Facebook posting or tweet. It is terrible how self absorption and lack of empathy pervades so many. Well, I accept your careless natures. You are what you are. I will always remember that.

I will also always remember those sweet people who love me enough to check in.

Thank you nephews Michael and Adam. Thank you niece Anne Marie. Thank you dear friends Don Paul,Cathy Hechler, Jane Eve and Ken Ruisi.. Thank you cousins Nancy and Donna.  Thank you Aunt Grace & Rose. Thanks cousins Diane and Maryanne in San Francisco AND sister-in-law Colleen and brother-in-law Colin. And a special thanks to a great neighbor and friend, Jean Feldman.

You all understand that at whatever age , humans need to feel they matter. I am grateful. Michael, Adam, Anne Marie, Don, Cathy, Jane Eve, Ken, Nancy, Donna, Grace, Rose, Diane, Maryanne, Colleen and Colin & Jean - you all matter to me -  especially because I matter to you.

  2. Wonderful talking with you today. Hope you weather the storms.
Started watching "Christmas Evil" on You Tube. Will finish it later. The attack on the steps with the hatchet had my hands on my mouth!

  3. I know what you mean(.as a senior(older then you), I have greatly appreciated the calls and concern from TRUE family members and friends We live in a senior citizen complex and since Tuesday have been virtual prisoners. No one could get out no one could get in. Finally with the help of small bulldozers they have managed to be at least able to clear the entrance of close to 77 ", and more parking lots to tackle. Hang in there, soon it will be over(& then comes the rain). Love your dear "old" Aunt Anne

    1. Thanks for those words. Sorry, you had a rough go of it. Glad bulldozers came to the rescue. It's unbelievable- the snow is up to our windows now. I don't know how we are going to get out. I have a snow removal contractor doing my driveway t/m BUT the walkways and entrances are as high as I am. Frankly, it's scary. Hopefully it all melts in a day or 2 enough to enter and exit the house. Thankfully, we have plenty of food and our power is on. I am seriously considering becoming a snowbird. I always liked snow and winter but not this. This is a disaster!

  5. Just glad to hear you and Glen are doing good. I agree with you that the absence of human interaction is as bad as the storm itself. Unfortunately, it gives me more time to reflect on what my limitations are. Wish I could be as much okay with it as you seem to be. Love from your cuz buried alive in Hamburg, Sounds like a great novel to me

  6. One word for all of you: FLORIDA! LOL. Keep warm and especially keep safe. I remember the 7 feet we got in December 2001. Fun for like a day, then not so much.

  8. You are right. I was one who didn't call, text, or message to see if you were alright. We certainly get self absorbed at times, don't we? That is my fault. Regardless, i am glad you and Glenn are okay and hope you remain so.

Love you Uncle T & Uncle Glenn! I am praying for your safety! I understand how awful this storm is AND will continue to check in. I know that you are keeping in touch with my folks as well and that is appreciated. Praying the rains don't come! Praying the sun shines soon!!! Again, love you so much!

  12. Just got out my door. If you just step back, open your eyes, and I mean really open your eyes, you can actually see how incredibly beautiful all the sights around us are.

  13. P.S. I owe you and Glenn a wonderful hot meal. I know we always say that, but as corny as it sounds, circumstances like this make me homesick for my family. Miss you both very much. Love our wonderful and sometimes intense conversations. Stay warm and safe
